_Violence is not the answer_
There is no military solution to the Middle East conflict. There
cannot be a resolution based on the use of violence. Peace is the
common need of all peoples and nations of the region.
Since Israel began the assault on Gaza, hundreds have died, many
of them children; tens of thousands have been left terrified, not
knowing where to run; both Palestinians and Israelis are living in
fear. This is the result of the Israeli choice of military action: no one
can “win”. Palestinians, Israelis, the whole region, can only suffer.
The long-term Israeli blockade of Gaza has caused great suffering.
Eighty per cent of Gazans rely on food aid and unemployment
is around 80 per cent. The blockade has totally failed in its stated
purpose - it has instead consolidated the power of those parts of
Hamas that don’t want a political settlement, and weakened the
possibility of peaceful. democratic progress.
The invasion demonstrates the utter failure of the blockade and
wall; a wall that has, tragically, trapped Israel as surely as it has
imprisoned Palestinians.
Not only is the Israeli action hugely
disproportionate, it is also completely counterproductive
to the prospects for peace. The
population of Gaza is already suffering from the
Israeli blockade, which has accelerated their
decline into even greater hunger and poverty.
Casualties among the civilian population only
serve to make people more angry and sow the
seeds for further violence.
